A Requiremements Traceability Matrix (RTM) is a tool used to track requirements through the software development process. It can also be used for non software projects.

  • The RTM lists the functional and non functional requirements for a project and maps them against stages in the development lifecycle.
  • The stages could be high level such as Solution Architecture, System deployment, Solution Design, User Acceptance testing, Implementation.
  • The stages may be much more detailed; for example, each of many test cases could be tracked in each of the test activities (component tsting, itegration testing, user acceptance testing and so on.)
  • RTMs are usually managed by business analysts and updated regularly. Often they are created in spreadsheets but can be managed in more sophisticted tools.
